The ‘Consume Within’ App for iPhones will help you reduce waste by managing the food stored in your fridge, freezer and cupboards. It will monitor the safe storage life of individual items, even home cooked meals, and let you know when they’re getting close to expiry.

Reducing food waste is a major issue; it costs the average family with children $1000 a year and has serious environmental implications too. If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 impact would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off the road.

A recent study by the Environmental Protection Agency estimated that Americans generate roughly 30 million tons of food waste each year, which is about 12 percent of the total waste stream ...The numbers seem all the more staggering now, given the cost of groceries and the emerging food crisis abroad.

In the UK, it's estimated that households throw away 8.3 million tonnes of food every year.
